Donut Alley, Larkspur, Marin County
If you have a sweet tooth, Donut Alley is the number one spot for a weekend treat. Tucked away off the main drag of Downtown Larkspur, this is the locals' hideaway store, selling doughnuts from the old-school classic glazed, through to jelly-filled delights, the 'old-fashioned' (crinkle ring) doughnut, and the infamous 'foot'. The foot by name and nature is a foot-shaped doughnut with an original glaze finish. A winner with the kids, be sure to steal a toe or two before giving it to a loved one, to show just how much you care. My favourite is the deep-fried and glazed cinnamon roll, a real American treat that is irresistibly doughy and sticky, but not too sweet. You only need to ask if you want one of the larger, chocolate coated doughnuts to be filled with either a custard-like cream or 'jelly'. (And for the record an unfilled doughnut is not 'normal', it is merely 'unfilled'). These doughnuts are made with time, love and care, and the producers like to see them going to good, appreciative homes.
Donut Alley is unpretentious, and even basic in design; a dinky café set-up gives punters the opportunity to sit in. No frills, just good old friendly service and top quality doughnuts that they are proud to serve. Add a Hershey's chocolate milk for an extra sugar-hit and you are away. On exiting, you might realise that you have shared your daily plan, life story, hopes and dreams with the employees but they are always happy to listen and share their passions with you. You will walk away a happy chappy, paper bag in hand and the sweet sweet smell of deep-fried goodness filling the air. It is hard to resist popping a little beignet-style number into your mouth before you arrive home to share your newfound treasure with family and friends.
